Steer-by-wire

Steer-by-wire is one of the key technologies for high level automated driving.

This new technology involves a number of new developments. For example, highly dynamic evasive maneuvers require a decoupling of the steering angle of the wheels and the steering wheel, in order to prevent the driver being confronted with a sudden and fast turning steering wheel.

The trade-off between static and dynamic steering layout has been a challenge ever since. One solution is an individual wheel setting for each wheel. For years we have already been gathering experience in this field by developing our steer-by-wire concept for our concept vehicle SpeedE.

It features:

  • an adapted chassis concept
  • a mechatronic specification and implementation
  • a safety review according to ISO 26262 for components and on functional level
  • the integration of a new kind of side sticks for the vehicle’s lateral control
  • travel algorithms for vehicle guidance and feedback of the driving status
